My two books may seem very different. After all, kanji (a Japanese script) and abortion couldn't be much farther apart!

But there are a few throughlines. In both books I trace patterns and sort out complexities. I'm fascinated by how people think, how they reason through difficult or overwhelming things, and what they find meaningful; each work reflects this.

Students of Japanese either fall madly in love with kanji (the most complicated characters in Japanese writing) or regard this system as a maddening barrier to literacy. I’m in the first camp, and I’d love to help others discover how much fun kanji can be.

Millions of women have had abortions, but we usually can’t find each other when we go through this experience. There seems to be no socially acceptable way to come forward and share our stories, to reassure each other that whatever we feel is acceptable.
