Tell-Tail Evidence

A shopping plaza in Walnut Creek, California, features a bronze statue of a life-sized, female cougar in stalking position. My husband and I stood there one day, admiring the statue and observing the well-cared-for dogs who wander around the plaza while their owners shop. We watched as a freely roaming golden retriever took note of the cougar and came closer to investigate. The dog sidled around the front end, staying low and always keeping an eye on the potential predator. Then the dog walked to the cougar’s back end and took a good sniff under the tail. Apparently satisfied that this metallic creature posed no threat, the retriever relaxed noticeably and trotted away.
